toile de C.elegans, polyester raffia, transfer printed.
This toile references the classic French Toile de Jouy, but instead of depicting 18th century pastoral scene, the toile explores graphic representation of cellular divisions, DNA mapping and the C.elegans genome.
I also chose to reference the concept of aperiodic repeat.John Sulston told me in one of our meetings that DNA looks random, but it is not; it looks like a repeat but it is not.’ In his book, he also says “…the system for conveying the instructions for making a life from one generation to the next is digital not analogue” (The Common Thread p.24).
So this toile de C.elegans is printed using a digital technology and is designed so as to look in repeat but there is actually none.
